Duties and Responsibilities: Archivists play a necessary role in keeping history, art, and other publications, both public and private available and accessible from now and into the future. They will often design and organize a system for storage and retrieval.
Archivists will appraise collections, single documents, as well as historically valuable assets, and possibly arrange acquisitions of further material to scan, document, and preserve in other media formats such as photocopies, microfiche, and now scanning data to digital computer hard disk.
Common Tasks of an Archivist:
Appraising records for destruction or preservation
Designing and developing record keeping systems and solutions
Cataloguing collections and documents, information and records
Researching and implementing new and improved methods of accessibility
Arranging exhibitions and visits
Grant writing and managing budgets
Managing staff
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A dedication and commitment to history and preservation
Good organizational ability
Attention to detail
A strong ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as the ability to think fast and on your feet
IT and computer/software skills
Excellent communication skills
Management skills
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in Archives and Records Management or MLS
