Duties and Responsibilities: Art Directors have a wide range of duties and responsibilities and it is the Art Director who is responsible for the vision, process and production and the final outcome of their projects. An Art Director’s projects are wide ranging too, from magazine layouts, ads, website creatives, radio and television ads and spots, and even billboards. Anything that requires some kind of communication to a targeted audience that requires artwork or, copy writing for books, magazines or newspapers, visual or audio media communications, on any platform, requires an Art Director to oversee the process.
The Art Director usually creates the master vision, a broad design concept for the project by brainstorming ideas that will resonate with the audience. They select artists and designers for the project, hire moodels and selcet props, colors, and other required elements deemed necessary by the Art Director.They also coordinate photographers, web developers, camera operators and technicians, editors, builders for stages etc and often times hire them all according to their strengths. The Art Director has the final say in most projects.
Finally, when closing up a project they will usually have several rounds of meetings with the clients and often times solicitg feedback from focus groups, general groups of people setup to review the work, and offer their thoughts on the project. From this point, the Art Director might develop final touches and submit the work for publication.
Art Directors are found working with Ad Agencies, Magazines, Radio Stations, Television, Movie, and Hollywood in General, as well as working as in-house creatives for company marketing departments. They can also be found working as contractors.
