Is an MBA for Me?
You’ve just finished your undergrad or you started your career path in business; perhaps it’s in marketing, you’re starting a new company out of your garage, you work for a manufacturing company, etc. You’re having fun and you’re learning a lot when before you know it, you’ve flat-lined – you can’t climb any higher without another degree. You’re looking to be a director or senior management but you need an MBA.
This is just one example of running into the MBA choice and there are many. Fortunately, the varied ways people meet the MBA are as varied as there are outcomes. This degree opens many doors and you are a motivated individual if you are at this point.
MBA’s are for those who want to advance in their careers, change careers, add credentials to your resume/vitae. Perhaps you don’t want to leave school yet and want to jump straight into grad school.
What is an MBA?
An MBA is a Masters degree in Business Administration awarded following an average of 2 years in Business School. Invariably, MBA study is concentrated in different areas for instance marketing, international business, or perhaps finance. The core of the Masters program is graduate level study in theory and the practice of business management and leadership.
Classes and Courses of Study in Business School
Some of the classes you’ll find yourself taking in Business School:
| Business Writing Financial Accounting Cost Accounting Economic Concepts Applied Data Analysis Managerial Economics Information Resources and Technology Finance Marketing |
Managing Within the Legal, Ethical and Governmental Environment Personal Development for Leadership Theories and Models of Organization Macroeconomic Analysis Technology and Operations Management Quantitative Business Analysis Strategic Management |
and much much more.
How Do I Get My MBA?
An MBA is a career enhancer and will increase your salary often times by 100% or more, regardless of the industry you’re in. It will also give you the ability to make lateral movements among other industries if you need a career change.
When Should I Enroll for My MBA
The best time to matriculate to business school isn’t at first glance obvious. Typically, MBA programs prefer to see work experience, defined goals and references that are usually made outside of school and in the work environment. Undergrads can go straight to business school but upon graduation would earn much less than the graduate with work experience. Ultimately, both routes would achieve likely the same success at the same point in time. Ideally, working before entering your MBA program will give you a little extra time to study for the GMAT as well as define your business goals. Additionally, many employers will help subsidize your tuition if you go for the fully employed MBA program options, an alternative the student going straight through will miss.
Types of MBA Programs
There are many forms of the MBA program, the traditional 2 year full time degree, the 12 month option, the Online MBA, the Fully Employed night school style program, the Executive MBA for the CEO etc, and perhaps more. They all offer something different for different needs.
The traditional 2 year program doesn’t allow much outside working but allows more of a school life balance. The Online MBA made famous by University of Phoenix, offers the greatest amount of flexibility, but isn’t for everyone, particularly those looking for the greatest amount of freedom upon graduation. Although these programs similarly rigorous as the traditional institution, they aren’t always similarly accepted by employers. Be sure you understand exactly what you’re looking for. The Fully Employed MBA Programs are for the super go-getters that want to burn through an arduous academic program while working full time while the Executive MBA, much the same also offers better networking opportunities.
There are also different fields or specialized MBAs and Joint Program options to consider. Specialized MBAs i.e. an international IMBA, JD MBA, the Law School / Business School, take much longer but certainly make you more marketable.
MBA Careers and Opportunities
Ultimately, the choice you make will point you towards a particular career path, with the more general MBA leaving you wide open for any industry. Unlike Medical School, Business School graduates can go into almost any industry, including medicine. Some of the industries the require MBA graduates are listed below:
| Accounting Advertising & PR Agriculture Biotech Book Publishing Brand Management Broadcast & Entertainment Commercial Banking Communications Equipment Consumer Products Engineering Fashion Financial Services Hardware Health Care Hedge Funds IT & Operations Consulting Insurance |
Internet Investment Banking Investment Management Law Management Consulting Manufacturing New Media Nonprofit Pharmaceuticals Politics/Capitol Hill Real Estate Retail Software Technology Telecom & Wireless Transportation Venture Capital Web Consulting |
What Can an MBA do for me and My Career?
The Return on Investment ROI from Business School varies on a number of factors; the money forgone while attending school, the cost of the school you’re attending, the reputation you earn from the school you graduate from, the starting salary you end up with, signing bonuses and more. On average, Business Week reports it will take from 4 to 7 years to recoup your investment, down from 5 and 8 in the 1990’s. The cost varies from $40k for example at UCLA on up to almost $200 at Harvard and Stanford. Overall, most grads find a 72% increase in salaries on up to 190%, for those leaving Yale & Wharton, making B-School a relatively good investment.
